At the end of a VWFS PCP agreement, you usually have three main options. You can upgrade or part-exchange the vehicle and begin a new agreement, you can make the final/completion purchase payment and any other amounts payable to take ownership of the vehicle, or you can return the vehicle. If you choose to return it, the vehicle must meet the agreed return conditions, it must be within the agreed kilometre limit and all amounts due, other than the final payment where applicable, must be paid by the return date. If there is excess mileage or damage above fair wear and tear, additional amounts may still be payable. PCP can offer more end-of-term flexibility than standard Hire Purchase because you can choose whether to return the vehicle, change it, or make the final payment to take ownership.

To return your vehicle under the Vehicle Return Option Agreement, it must meet the Acceptable Return Condition requirements set out in your contract. These requirements allow for normal fair wear and tear, but the vehicle must be in good working order, contain all original equipment supplied with it, and have been serviced and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommended instructions. You should also check the agreed maximum kilometre limit and the excess kilometre charge shown in your Vehicle Return Option Agreement. If you choose to hand back the vehicle and the agreed kilometre limit has been exceeded, or if there is damage or deterioration above acceptable return standards, additional charges may apply. Excess kilometre charges can vary by brand.

How does PCP compare to HP for a new car in Ireland?

PCP and HP can both help you finance a new car, but they work differently. PCP may offer lower monthly repayments than HP for the same vehicle, term and deposit because part of the vehicle value is deferred until the end of the agreement as the Guaranteed Future Value/final payment. HP is usually a more straightforward route if your aim is ownership. You pay fixed monthly repayments over the agreed term and, once all payments due under the agreement have been discharged, you are entitled  to purchase the vehicle by paying the completion/final purchase instalment and any other amounts payable. Title to the vehicle only passes once that purchase has been completed.

In simple terms, PCP may offer more end-of-term flexibility, while HP may be more suitable if your main aim is to own the vehicle at the end of the agreement.
